Frizzle top is a common disorder in palm trees that causes new leaves to appear yellow, frizzled, and distorted. It's caused by a manganese deficiency, which can also affect Sago palms.
Symptoms of frizzle top include:
New fronds: Appear smaller and chlorotic, and subsequent sets may appear withered, scorched, or frizzled
Stunted growth:
New growth may emerge stunted and crinkled
Frizzle top is most common in Queen and Royal palms, but other species, including sagos, may also be affected. Symptoms are most obvious in winter and spring because the roots are less active, preventing the plant from gathering nutrients.
To treat frizzle top, you can apply manganese to your palm. You can use fertilizers that contain water-soluble manganese, or you can spray the foliage with manganese sulfate. The amount of manganese sulfate you need to apply depends on the palm species, soil type, and severity of the deficiency. For example, you might need 5 pounds of manganese sulfate for large sago palms in alkaline soils, but only a few ounces for small palms. Spraying the foliage may be more effective than soil applications, but it only provides short-term results. If left untreated, frizzle top can cause palms to die from a lack of nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
Treatment
The Arborjet Drill, Plug and Inject Method is a Plant Health Care Program Arborjet has developed to protect valuable trees. Trees are often attacked and damaged well before symptoms are seen. This program allows us to protect high value trees before or after symptoms are present. We can also protects those trees for many more pests than discussed here.
PALM-jet Mg is a fertilizer, containing minerals such as Potassium (K) and Magnesium (Mg) to maintain green foliage, alleviate symptoms of Frizzle Top and alleviate seasonal nutrient deficiencies.
